Independence

As a guest writer at Questiv, I want to share an idea. Have you ever wondered why your life has to be determined by others?

For kids or teenagers: from needing signatures to having a bank account, you need a parent or guardian to rely on. Has it ever happened to you that you tell your parents that you have a concert a week earlier, and when you tell your parents on the day of the concert in an annoyed tone they go, “Why didn’t you tell me earlier?” Then that’s when you feel it: the desire to be in charge, the desire to be alone, the desire to be independent.

For adults: You may have a boss and/or coworkers at your job. Does it ever happen that you get belittled by your boss? Or maybe your coworkers get away with doing nothing on a group project? Then again you feel that desire: the desire to be free, the desire to be alone, the desire to be independent.

Independent is the keyword here. We all have had that feeling to want all of the power to ourselves because other people can’t do things right. They don’t understand you. They have their work to tend to. They deceive you. They don’t prioritize you.

Are you mad just thinking about this?

Think of the bigger picture. In the mixed and market economy, “consumer is king.” This means that consumers have control of the economy. For consumers to receive goods and services, they rely on producers. Therefore consumers and producers rely on each other.

There is nothing much we as a whole can do about the economy besides persuading people and voicing opinions. Likewise, there is not much you can do about other people besides trying to settle a problem by talking.

The point is don’t beat yourself up about situations that are out of your control. You have control of what you are involved in. Even though it may not seem like it, just as you depend on other people, other people depend on you. Yes, even your parents depend on you. They rely on you to fill them with happiness or bring a good name to the family just as you rely on them to take care of you.
